Erasmus Intensive Language Courses

  • Application deadline for the courses in the autumn semester 2012 is May 20, 2012.
  • Application deadline for the courses in the spring semester 2013 is October 21, 2012.

General

Erasmus students can participate in Erasmus Intensive Language Courses, which are specialized courses in the less widely used and less taught European Union languages and the languages of other countries participating in Erasmus. The EILC courses are given at two levels, beginner’s (level I) and intermediate level (level II). Erasmus students have the opportunity to study the language of the host country for 6 weeks maximum, in the host country, before starting the Erasmus period. Generally the courses are run in the summer prior to the beginning of the academic year but some courses are also run in January/ February for students studying abroad in the second semester.

EILCs take place in the following countries: Belgium (Flemish Community), Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. French, English, German and Spanish are not eligible languages. Also, Finnish students cannot participate in Swedish language courses. Please note that JAMK University of Applied Sciences does not have Erasmus exchange with all the above mentioned countries.

The EILC is free of charge for Erasmus students, but other costs (e.g. travel and living expenses) will have to be paid by the student. A supplementary Erasmus grant of 400 euros may be awarded for the duration of the course and it should be applied for in the same form as the Erasmus grant. In order to get a supplementary Erasmus grant, the student must inform International Services of his/her acceptance (a letter of acceptance) and afterwards of the attendance (e.g. with a course certificate). Student may participate in EILC courses only if the Erasmus-exchange will be realized.

Further details including general information and course information can be found on the European Commission’s EILC website in April. On the website you can find the basic information of the courses and instructions on applying.

Make sure that you are using an updated form for the academic year in question.

Applying

There is an application period twice a year: in May for the courses in the autumn semester and in October for the courses in the spring semester.

The student fills out a separate application form, which can be found on the EILC website (in the section ‘how to apply’).
It is filled out electronically and should be sent to International Services as an email attachment; write “EILC application + the academic year in question” in the subject line and send to international@jamk.fi. All the applications are sent from the International Services to the course organizers.

Additionally, the student should inform the International Coordinator of his/her school about the application. Further details including general information, course information and application forms can be found on the European Commission’s EILC website.
