In the spring 2017 I was first year student searching for a farm to carry out a practice period. I didn\u2019t have any experience of farm work. With the help of a co-student I found an interesting sheep farm to get familiar with the life of a livestock farm. Soon after starting the practice period I got a task to measure the temperature of weird tubes filled with manure. Turned out there was also something else going on than raising sheep…<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The start up company located at the farm had started research and develop a forced aeriation composting system that would reclaim heat and ammonia from bedded pack barn. The news being that the animals are living in the system while it is on. The goals of the start up were to find out if this kind of system would be possible to build and could it really work in practice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The farmer, Eemeli Piesala, had a problem he wanted to solve for all the bedded pack manure users: How to turn the costs of manure handling to profits? He gathered group of open minded people, founded a company, applied for finance from the state key project program for nutrient cycling (Ravinteiden kierr\u00e4tyksen kokeiluohjelma) and got the money.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the beginning all didn\u2019t go as planned. The project workers who were supposed to carry out the project were hired for other jobs at the other side of the country. All but Eemeli. So he needed to form a new group to execute the project plan and that is how I started to work part-time at Pasrea after two weeks of practice at the Piesala farm in April 2017. My tasks were to keep track of paper work needed to be done, take pictures and handle communications, assist with research and development, create posters and what ever needed to be done. I got to attend some seminars, the Okra-exhibition and an international conference.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the end we made it. The project ran to its end and it was proceeded according to the plan. Three different scale systems were built. The biggest system is working now in the 600 square meter sheep house and producing heat which is used to heat buildings of the farm. More research is needed to find out the best ways to enhance composting process and find the most cost efficient way to collect the ammonium.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I could never have guessed where the very first contact with a livestock farm would take me. The year gave me a broad view to the field of bioeconomy and nutrient cycling. It was all new, sometimes rough like work is, sometimes frustrating and all together extreamly instructive. I couldn\u2019t have had a better start to my studies!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My advice to all the students: bravely seize the opportunities popping up to your way. You will learn A LOT. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Oppimismahdollisuus: Ty\u00f6skenteleminen Pasrea-kompostorin tutkimus- ja tuotekehityshankkeessa<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Ensimm\u00e4isen opiskeluvuoteni kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4, vuonna 2017, piti suorittaa harjoittelu kotiel\u00e4intilalla. En ollut aiemmin ollut tekemisiss\u00e4 maatalouden kanssa ja olin t\u00e4ysin uuden edess\u00e4. Onneksi opiskelukaveri vinkkasi kiinnostavasta lammastilasta, jonne sainkin menn\u00e4 oppimaan el\u00e4intenhoitoa. Pian kyll\u00e4 k\u00e4vi ilmi, ett\u00e4 ty\u00f6nkuvaan mahtuu muutakin, huomasin nimitt\u00e4in mittaavani kummallisten lannalla t\u00e4ytettyjen putkien l\u00e4mp\u00f6tiloja jo harjoittelun alkuvaiheessa. Tilalla olikin k\u00e4ynniss\u00e4 tutkimushanke, jonka my\u00f6t\u00e4 sain tilaisuuden tutustua lampaankasvatuksen lis\u00e4ksi suomalaisen biotalouden hankemaailmaan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tilalla oli k\u00e4ynniss\u00e4 samaisessa paikassa toimivan start up -yrityksen tutkimus- ja tuotekehityshanke, jossa tutkittiin uudenlaisen ilmastukseen perustuvan kompostointij\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n rakennettavuutta ja toimivuutta. J\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n tarkoituksena on mahdollistaa kuivikepohjalannan kompostoituessa muodostuvan l\u00e4mm\u00f6n ja vapautuvan ammoniakin talteenotto. Erityist\u00e4 kompostointij\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4lle on se, ett\u00e4 se sijaitsee ja toimii el\u00e4insuojassa, kun el\u00e4imet ovat sis\u00e4ll\u00e4.<\/span><\/p>\n

J\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n kehitt\u00e4minen sai alkunsa, kun lampuri Eemeli Piesala halusi ratkaista kuivikepohjalanan k\u00e4sittelyn haasteita ja muuttaa lannan kuluer\u00e4st\u00e4 tuottoa tuovaksi osaksi tilojen toimintaa. H\u00e4n ker\u00e4si ymp\u00e4rilleen j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n mahdollisuuksista kiinnostuneen porukan, jonka kanssa h\u00e4n perusti yrityksen ja haki hankkeelle rahoitusta. Rahoitus saatiin hallituksen k\u00e4rkihankkeena ravinteiden kierr\u00e4tyksen kokeiluohjelmasta.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hankkeen aloitus ei mennyt kuitenkaan suunnitelmien mukaan. Hankkeeseen kaavaillusta tiimist\u00e4 kaikki muut paitsi Eemeli ty\u00f6llistyiv\u00e4t muihin teht\u00e4viin Etel\u00e4-Suomeen. Eemelin oli etsitt\u00e4v\u00e4 hankkeelle uudet tekij\u00e4t. N\u00e4in min\u00e4 sain osa-aikaisen teht\u00e4v\u00e4n hankkeen hallinnon parissa pariviikkoisen tilaharjoittelun p\u00e4\u00e4tteeksi. Hankkeen aikana mm. laskin palkkoja, laadin maksatushakemuksia, otin valokuvia, rakensin tutkimusj\u00e4rjestelmi\u00e4, suunnittelin ja toteutin julisteita sek\u00e4 tein muuta viestint\u00e4\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi p\u00e4\u00e4sin osallistumaan pariin seminaariin, Okra-maatalousn\u00e4yttelyyn ja kansainv\u00e4liseen konferenssiin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hanke p\u00e4\u00e4ttyi elokuun 2018 lopussa. Se toteutettiin suunnitelman mukaan. Hankkeen aikana rakennettiin kolmen eri kokoluokan j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4t, joista suurin toimii 600 neli\u00f6isess\u00e4 lampolassa. J\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4 tuottaa l\u00e4mp\u00f6\u00e4 tilan rakennusten tarpeisiin. Lis\u00e4tutkimukset ovat viel\u00e4 tarpeen, jotta kompostoitumisprosessia saadaan optimoitua ja ammoniakin talteenottoon kehitetty\u00e4 taloudellisesti kannattava menetelm\u00e4.<\/span><\/p>\n

En tosiaan arvannut, mihin lyhyt harjoittelu lammastilalla voisi minut vied\u00e4. Se tarjosi ensikosketuksen kotiel\u00e4intalouteen, mutta johti lopulta syvent\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4n oppiin yritt\u00e4misest\u00e4 ja biotalouden alasta. Vuosi oli vaihteleva ja paikoin rankka sek\u00e4 turhauttava mutta kaikin puolin eritt\u00e4in opettavainen ja antoisa. En todellakaan voi kuvitella parempaa aloitusta opinnoille.<\/span><\/p>\n
